The Importance of Sustainable Software #
Today, when we talk about pollution, we immediately think of transportation or industries. But did you know that the digital world also has a massive impact on the environment? Always-on servers, continuous data transfers, and energy-hungry data centers consume incredible amounts of power.
As a developer, I believe everyone must do their part. That is why, when designing and developing Send to Police (the app that automates guest registration submissions to the Italian State Police portal), I focused not only on privacy and ease of use, but also on eco-sustainability.
A Carbon-Free Infrastructure #
Send to Police is proudly a carbon-free application. How did we achieve this milestone?
1. On-Device Processing #
The core of the app is its Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system. Most of the magic happens directly on your smartphone, using machine learning models executed locally (on-device).
What does this mean for the environment? It means we are not sending heavy photos back and forth across the network, and we are not keeping expensive, energy-hungry servers running 24/7 just to extract data from a document. This choice not only reduces network energy consumption to zero but also guarantees absolute privacy.
2. Zero Intermediary Servers #
Many apps use intermediary servers to collect data, process it, and then forward it. Send to Police does not. The app communicates directly from your phone to the Alloggiati Web portal.
Fewer servers mean less physical hardware needed, less energy consumed for data center cooling, and a much lighter, more ecological infrastructure.
3. Cloud Services (Only When Strictly Necessary) #
The only exception is the optional use of artificial intelligence (Gemini Flash) as a last resort for unreadable documents. For this, we rely on Google Cloud, a provider that has been carbon neutral since 2007 and today powers its facilities with 100% renewable energy, aiming to operate entirely on clean energy at all times by 2030.
A Paperless Approach: Zero Paper #
Traditionally, managing a B&B or holiday home means accumulating dozens of photocopies of ID documents, paper notes, and physical registers that will inevitably end up being pulped.
With Send to Police, the entire process is digitized. You scan the document, the app reads the data, and sends it. No photocopies, no paper waste, no printer toner. The environment thanks you.
